I had a really hard time getting time to sit down and really design and think about it without feeling overwhelmed with my circumstances. My current job is very demanding and I am taking 4 classes. My schedule is beyond busy, but I need to find the time for everything and push through till the end of the semester no matter what.

Talking about this design direction. I want to display a clean layout where simplicity and cleanliness is what comes to mind when visiting the new redesigned site. Fonts are clean, modern and easy to read. There is a hierarchy in the type size and a clear differentiation between navigation bars.

I kept the blue and orange color palette from the old site, but applied it to the font colors, so the background is just clean. The images should be big and appealing enough to get the user interested to see and visit the features.

Overall, clean, modern and simple (but not boring look.)

Wireframes are used to layout the content that will be on the website. They are storyboards for the website.

You do not need to define key user paths if the user is not required to do anything task oriented.

A site map shows all HTML pages in proper section along with sub pages within a navigation element. Site maps are often plain simple usually implying main organization and information within a webpage.

The two types of naming conventions are:

-Organization/Numeric naming- applying a numeric or alpha numeric standard to individual pages and sections.

-HTML NAMING- many choose to abbreviate or shorten words to simply and shorten long name to make organization easier.

What are the “three views” discussed in the book involving the content of the site. And what are the differences between the three views?  A)Site View or sitemapping. Is the “blueprint” of the site that sets the overall structure. B) Page View or wireframing. Presents and organizes the content, navigation, and visuals in a way that is meaningful to the visitor. C) User View that defines key user paths.

What is a “content audit?” It is an evaluation of every piece of relevant content that will go into the redesign of the site.

Name a few examples of “overall goals” for the web site design or re-design.

Simplify the navigation system, organize the content, and elevate the look and feel to a more modern, less newsletter looking site.

What does a Project Plan consist of?

The project plan consists of a detailed overview of the work involved, how it will be done, and what will be charged for the work done. The client acknowledges they understand what the team is about to take on their behalf by agreeing to the project plan.

Give examples of good documentation practices for a project.

Keep track of time. Save all email regarding the project, especially approvals and make sure to get client sign offs for those approvals. Keep a project binder or file.

When is an Additional Charge Form Used?

An additional charge form should be used to document changes in scope and additions to features that were not included in the original plan.

What are the two ways to approach the Scheduling task?

Scheduling task can be made approached as a chronological method overview or detailed dates with itemized deliverables.

What is the difference between a Visual Designer and an Information Designer?

The visual designer creates graphics that communicate finished concepts; and the Information Designer creates structural graphics from concepts into functional schematics (wireframes).

What is a “staging area?

The staging area serves as a hub of communication for the project being worked on with a client staging site and development area.

What is included in the agenda of a “kick off” meeting?

Project plan, overview, schedule, deliverables, and details.

What are the differences between a Formal and an Informal Industry Analysis?

A Formal Industry Analysis includes research done by an independent team with specific expertise. The approach is based on analyzing the specific industry, market segmentation, trends and forecasts, and customer needs. The gathered information is quite extensive and the process expensive, starting at $20,000 and up.  Provides  comprehensive, detailed, strategy-based recommendations on changing marketplaces.

An informal Features Analysis is conducted by members of the web development team who re-create the user experience online. An informal analysis of competitive sites is performed that focuses on features and user experience. The results offer qualitative information and the focus is on which features are working and which ones aren’t. All explained in 5 to 20 pages.  It is a less expensive than the formal analysis option and provides relevant documentation and industry information to the client.

Name a few of the features you might look for when you are doing a Competitive Analysis.

Media. Audio, video, etc

Graphics. Splash pages, gifs, ads, frames, etc

Content. Press releases, company descriptions, bios, product description, etc

Functionality. Search, login, forums, online purchasing, security, etc.

User Interface. good design, lame design, professional (or not)

What are the three main areas for rating when evaluating for a Competitive Analysis?

- Overall Experience

- Functionality

- Look and feel

Core Design Process

How many phases are part of the Core Process and what are they?

There are 5 phases and they are define, structure, design, build, and measure.

What is “Scope Creep” and how can you prepare for it?

The scope creep is when your project goes from something defined  to something significantly bigger. You can prevent it by telling your client and your team at the kick off meeting how keeping careful tabs  on the schedule, deliverables, and process will help keep the project on target.

What are the two ways to combat content delay?

Hire a content manager to oversee the content delivery process, and create a content delivery plan outlining realistic dates for delivery according to readiness.

What does the “QA” in QA testing stand for?

Quality Assurance

What do the authors mean when they refer to “Smart Design?”

Smart design is focused on the audience experience. You achieve it when you think like your audience.

Gathering Information

What does the word “Discovery” refer to?

It refers to a thinking process to allow team members to put themselves in the minds of the site’s users and understand the target audience, the company, the site and the project as much as possible.

Give me a couple examples of “good client” attributes and “red flag client” warning signs.

Good client attributes: Answers the client survey and a clear and detailed manner; is part of the solution instead of the problem.

Red flag client attributes:  The client doesn´t know what the content should be, but wants it to look cool; indecisive, changes mind frequently, unable to articulate feedback.

Understanding your Audience

What is an audience profile? What is another name for it?

It is a detailed appraisal of our customers’ characteristics, attitudes and behaviors. It is also called a persona.

Name some of the things you need to analyze when determining an audience’s capabilities?

Preferred browser, bandwidth, monitor size, operating system.

Hi class, So I got rid of my original design and I did a few revisions of what could be the entire site for OC Landscape design. I am going to try to upload a gallery of it and see if it works.

I hope you enjoy it.
